Broken Garage Door Spring Replaced for Homeowner Near Eagleton Village in Maryville
A homeowner near Eagleton Village recently contacted Skylift Garage Doors after experiencing one of the most common and frustrating garage door problems: a broken torsion spring.
The customer reported hearing a sudden loud “snap” from the garage one evening. The following morning, when they attempted to leave for work, the garage door would only lift a few inches before stopping completely. Concerned that the opener had failed, they contacted our team for assistance.
Diagnosing the Problem
Upon arrival, our technician performed a full inspection of the garage door system and quickly identified the source of the issue. One of the torsion springs mounted above the garage door had broken, preventing the spring system from properly supporting the weight of the door.
Many homeowners are surprised to learn that garage door springs do most of the heavy lifting. While the opener helps guide the door up and down, the springs actually counterbalance the door’s weight. When a spring breaks, the opener is suddenly forced to lift far more weight than it was designed to handle.
In this case, the homeowner had a double-car steel garage door that relied on a two-spring torsion system. One spring had failed completely, while the second spring showed visible signs of wear and was approaching the end of its service life.
Why We Recommended Replacing Both Springs
Although only one spring had broken, our technician recommended replacing both springs as a matched set.
When one spring fails, the second spring has typically experienced a similar number of operating cycles and often isn’t far behind. Replacing both springs at the same time helps restore proper door balance and reduces the likelihood of another unexpected breakdown in the near future.
The homeowner agreed with the recommendation, and our technician proceeded with the repair.
Completing the Spring Replacement
After safely releasing the remaining spring tension, both worn springs were removed and replaced with new high-quality torsion springs sized specifically for the weight and dimensions of the garage door.
Once the new springs were installed, the system was carefully adjusted and balanced. Proper balancing is a critical step in any spring replacement because it ensures the garage door operates smoothly and places minimal strain on the opener and other hardware.
After completing the installation, our technician performed multiple operational tests to verify that the door opened and closed correctly.
Additional Safety Inspection
As part of the service visit, Skylift Garage Doors also completed a full safety inspection of the garage door system.
During the inspection, we checked:
- Rollers and hinges for wear
- Lift cables for fraying or damage
- Track alignment
- Safety sensors
- Opener performance
- Door balance and travel limits
- Hardware tightness and overall condition
Fortunately, the remaining components were in good condition and required no additional repairs.
A Fully Functional Garage Door Once Again
Following the spring replacement and safety inspection, the garage door was operating smoothly and safely once again. The homeowner was able to resume normal use of the garage without concern about additional strain on the opener or other components.
Broken garage door springs are one of the most common service calls we receive throughout Maryville, Eagleton Village, and surrounding communities. Because springs experience thousands of operating cycles throughout their lifespan, eventual failure is a normal part of garage door ownership.
Homeowners who notice unusual noises, uneven door movement, difficulty opening the door, or visible gaps in the spring should schedule an inspection before a complete failure occurs.
If your garage door spring has broken or your door is no longer operating properly, Skylift Garage Doors provides professional garage door spring repair services throughout Maryville and the surrounding East Tennessee area.
