Torsion Springs

Torsion springs sit on a metal shaft above the door opening, running parallel to the top of the door itself. They twist when the door moves, storing and releasing energy as the door opens and closes. These are the more common setup on newer builds and double doors. When a torsion spring breaks, you’ll usually see a visible gap in the coil, like someone cut it with pliers. The door often won’t open at all, or it’ll open about six inches and then stop.

Extension Springs

Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on either side of the door, stretching and contracting as the door moves. Older homes and single car garages sometimes still have these. If one breaks, you might see it hanging loose, or the door might open crooked because only one side is still pulling its weight.
