A homeowner in Oak Ridge recently contacted Skylift Garage Doors after their garage door suddenly stopped opening. The door would only lift a few inches before slamming back down. When our technician arrived, the problem was immediately clear – a broken torsion spring.
This home sits in a neighborhood just off Oak Ridge Turnpike near Melton Lake Drive, where many houses were built with heavier insulated garage doors. Those doors are great for energy efficiency, but they rely heavily on properly balanced torsion springs to operate safely. When a spring snaps, the opener can’t safely lift the weight of the door.
Our technician performed a full inspection of the system before starting repairs. The original spring had reached the end of its cycle life and had fractured at the winding cone. Because springs work as a balanced pair, we replaced both torsion springs to ensure proper door balance and long-term reliability.
After installing the new high-cycle springs, we:
• Rebalanced the garage door
• Lubricated all moving components
• Checked the cables and drums for wear
• Tested the opener safety system
Once the repair was complete, the door lifted smoothly and quietly again.
Broken garage door springs are one of the most common service calls we see throughout Oak Ridge, Clinton, and the surrounding Anderson County communities. The combination of daily use and seasonal temperature swings in East Tennessee gradually weakens spring steel over time.
The homeowner now has a properly balanced door that operates safely – and avoids the risk of further damage to the opener system.
If your garage door suddenly feels heavy, uneven, or won’t open, a broken spring is often the cause.
